When I was a new mom, I never fully believed it when I was told that my children would grow up in the blink of an eye. I’m pretty sure most new moms feel the same way. Sleep exhaustion can do that to you. Now that my oldest is in the 7th grade, I believe it.

One thing that I’ve learned over the years is that your children will forget the  toys that you bought them, but they will never forget the memories you make with them. My family has had some of the best bonding experiences right here in Ocean County, NJ. There are tons of local places right in your backyard where you can make these unforgettable memories with your family–and they’re almost all either free or virtually free.

Read on to find 20 unforgettable things to do with the family in Ocean County, NJ.

1.Walk the trails all the way down to the beach at Cattus Island County Park.


2.Climb to the top of the observation deck at Jake’s Branch County Park and take in the breathtaking view of the Pine Barrens.

Jakes Branch County Park has a must-see observation deck with a splendid view of the Pine Barrens.


3.Go kayaking at Double Trouble State Park.

Double Trouble State Park in Lacey and Berkeley Twp. is one of Ocean County's best kept secrets for tubing fun with the family.


4.Attend the annual Pine Barrens Jamboree at Wells Mills County Park. It’s totally free and the next one is on October 14th. It will have: -Music of the Pines -Cultural Demonstrations & Lectures -Traditional Crafts & Crafters -Kids Crafts & Games -Nature & History Programs -Food -Free Shuttle Buses and much more.

5.Get spooked at Scary Rotten Farms in Brick on their haunted hayride. It’s SUPER scary–definitely only for older kids! (Click here to find a few non-spooky hayrides.)

6.Rent a canoe at Wells Mills County Park. Visit the Nature Center and take a stroll around the gorgeous lake. It’s breathtaking.

7.Sign up for story time at any branch of the Ocean County Library.

8.Sign up for ANY event at the Ocean County Library.

Yes, they even have Burmese Pythons at the Ocean County Library! (Sometimes)


9.Try to get out of the corn maze at Argos Farm.

10.  Pick blueberries in the summer at Emery’s Farm.

11.Ride everything at Jenkinson’s Boardwalk.


12.Visit Storybook Land at Christmas time Get there by 5:00PM when Santa Claus appears in his chimney, waves his magic wand, and lights the park with over one million lights for the holiday season! Santa is in his home and lights the park until December 23.

13.Earn a certificate after climbing to the top of the Barnegat Lighthouse. You can get them at the Visitor’s Center for $1. It’s the second largest lighthouse in NJ and so much fun for every age.

14.Watch a movie on the beach in Seaside Heights.

Movies on the beach in Seaside are something you just have to experience as a family.


15.Explore the trails at Freedom Fields County Park.


16.Examine bugs up close at Insectropolis.

17. Plunder the seas on a Jersey Shore Pirates Adventure in Brick.

18.Take a behind the scenes tour of Jenkinson’s Aquarium.

Go behind the scenes and get a unique view of this spectacular little aquarium in Point Pleasant.


19.Sign up for a summer or fall program through the Ocean County Parks System. There are TONS of them.

20.Take in a light show at Robert J. Novins Planetarium.


The train at Allaire State Park is a state treasure.


Bonus: Ride the train at Allaire State Park. This is technically in Monmouth County but it’s so close that I had to add it. It’s one of our absolute favorite things to do as a family. You also have to take a guided tour of Mr. Allaire’s house and go hiking through their trails.
